"The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell."
Whoa! We are ALL in trouble! We say things unthinkingly, or out of anger, and can be the cause of great harm and pain.
James 3:10 "Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be."
The fact that we all sin in many ways (v2), is a reminder that none of us are perfect, but that does not give us license to "let it all hang out." (am I dating myself?). The desire of the writer is that we must hold ourselves accountable for the uncontrolled use of our tongues - which can be "a world of evil".
I have always wondered about that phrase. That is so strong... and shocking. But at the same time, if indeed the tongue can be the cause of that much harm, perhaps we need to pay more attention to what comes out of our mouths. And, again, I am convicted... how about you?
