    Victory in the Lord Jesus Christ

    January 19, 2017

    Guy Warner... January 17, 2017.

     PRAYER and Welcome

     Guy was more than an Elder in our Church. He was a compassionate, clear thinking, decisive, wise, humble, loving, caring man. He was my friend.

     Some other things Guy was: an avid wood-worker – making exquisitely beautiful things.

    Very few people in this world show that kind of passion for God's creation – taking wood and making it a work of art. That was a reflection of his passion for life and how he felt about his family.

     He was a good husband and father; he loved his family... was passionate about each one of his brothers and sisters and was willing to do anything for his family and for his children.

     Guy was a “fighter” - he fought for his family, his principles... and his life... he is our hero.

     More than anything else he was a man of God. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart, soul and mind. He loved the Word of God, loved our Church and was never afraid to show his love for God.

    NIV84: Ho 13:14

    14 “I will ransom them from the power of the grave;

    I will redeem them from death.

    Where, O death, are your plagues?

    Where, O grave, is your destruction?

    NIV84 : Is 25:6–9

    Praise to the Lord

    6 On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare

    a feast of rich food for all peoples,

    a banquet of aged wine—

    the best of meats and the finest of wines.

    7 On this mountain he will destroy

    the shroud that enfolds all peoples,

    the sheet that covers all nations;

    8 he will swallow up death forever.

    The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears

    from all faces;

    he will remove the disgrace of his people

    from all the earth.

    The Lord has spoken.

    9 In that day they will say,

    “Surely this is our God;

    we trusted in him, and he saved us.

    This is the Lord, we trusted in him;

    let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

     NIV84: Heb 2:14–15

    14 •Since the children have flesh and blood, •he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who •all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

     NIV84: Ro 8:37–39

    37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

     NIV84: 1 Jn 5:4–5 Faith in the Son of God

    This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 •Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

    1 Cor 15:50-58 - VICTORY OVER DEATH

     NIV84: The Resurrection Body

    50 •I declare •to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, •the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable •must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal•• with immortality. 54 •When the perishable •has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal•• with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

    55 “Where, O death, is your victory?

    Where, O death, is your sting?”

    56 •The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

    1. BELIEVERS IN CHRIST ARE NOT BOUND BY THE POWER OF EVIL AND DEATH.

      DEATH IS TEMPORARY.... VICTORY IN CHRIST IS PERMANENT.

    NASB95: Chapter 15:54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.

    1 Corinthians 15:54 (NLT)

    54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die,* this Scripture will be fulfilled:

    Death is swallowed up in victory.*

    “swallowed up” - destroyed, devoured

    Note:

    Death is Swallowed up in VICTORY.

    NIKOS - victory1 victory. 2 to utterly vanquish.

    .. Sense: A SUCCESSFUL ENDING TO A STRUGGLE....

    Louw-Nida: 39.57 νικάω; νίκη, ης; νῖκος, ους

      1. νικάω; νίκη, ης f; νῖκος, ους n: to win a victory over—‘to be victorious over, to be a victor, to conquer, victory.’..

     NIV84: Heb 2:14–15

    14 •Since the children have flesh and blood, •he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who •all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

    1. OUR SUFFERINGS – INCLUDING DEATH ARE A PART OF THIS LIFE, BUT GONE FOR ETERNITY

    DEATH IS TEMPORARY.... VICTORY IN CHRIST IS PERMANENT.

    NASB95: 1 Cor 15:55

    55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

     What about that “sting”?... Death and grief stings! The image the Scripture gives is like a bee sting.

    Yes, it hurts to say goodbye, it stings.

    Yes, the memories of a life together, and what could have been – sting.... but it is NOT permanent!

    1. THE POWER OF EVIL AND DEATH AS BEEN BROKEN AT THE CROSS.

      DEATH IS TEMPORARY.... VICTORY IN CHRIST IS PERMANENT.

    NASB95: Chapter 15

    56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;

    This means that if it were not for the presence of Sin in the world, there would be no suffering and death. However, because there IS sin and death in our world the Law of God reminds us of our need for salvation in Christ.

     57but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    νῖκος: τῷ δὲ θεῷ χάρις τῷ διδόντι ἡμῖν τὸ νῖκος διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

    thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ’ 1 Cor 15:57.

     Note:

    Finally, there is a sigh of relief! "Thanks be to God..." !

     Notice where the victory comes from.... “through our Lord Jesus Christ...”

    How does that happen:

    1. we recognize our sin is an offence towards God

    2. we realize it is Christ alone who can save us from our sin

    3. we receive the Lord Jesus Christ into our lives by asking Him to save us from sin.                           When that occurs in your you life.... you have the “Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” !
